Burgruine Löwenburg

Gerolstein

High above Gerolstein lies the ruins of the medieval Löwenburg. Gerhard VI of Blankenheim (1314 – 50) was named after the castle Gerhardstein, today known as Löwenburg. The castle was destroyed in the War of the Palatinate Succession in 1691 and never rebuilt. Today, the 11 m high shield wall as well as the remains of residential buildings remind of its once great importance as a royal seat. The castle ruin is open all year round and offers a wonderful view over Gerolstein, the Dolomites massif and the Kyll valley.

Tip: The castle ruin Löwenburg is located just a few meters away from the Eifelsteig and on the volcanic Eifel path Keltenpfad. A short detour to the historic walls is rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view.
