Vulkan-Panorama-Wanderweg
Walsdorf
The circular trail offers an insight into our volcanic past and a view from the XXL bench over our beautiful volcanic Eifel in the present.
The Arensberg, one of the biggest geological attractions in Gerolsteiner Land, is the only significant volcanic peak from the Tertiary period. Two volcanic eruptions created a mountain where there was none before. The first occurred around 32 million years ago, the second eruption took place around 24 million years ago. The Arensberg used to be much higher. While millions of years ate away at the old ash deposits from the first eruption, it was people in the 19th century who took away the mountain's summit. Gradually, people penetrated deeper and deeper into the mountain and followed the vent into the depths. You can enter the crater through a tunnel. Here, the old quarry offers an impressive view into the interior of an extinct volcano. Further on, the imposing XXL bench awaits with an impressive panoramic view.
