Gerolstein
Hike with the Gerolstein Eifel Association
A little-known area of the Volcanic Eifel that is full of beauty. The route first leads us from the Duppach sports ground along the Oosbach, then over the Heidberg to Auel and in the village directly past the church, which is well worth seeing. We then climb in a wide arc up to the Wahlhausen votive chapel, a marvellous vantage point. From there, we descend into the village and up to the volcano garden and the Eifelblick Steffelberg, another highlight. The "Steffelner Drees" mineral spring and, above all, the idyllic Eichholzmaar are further highlights, and shortly before the end of the tour we come across a cultural and historical treasure: the excavations of a villa and its burial monuments, which a wealthy Roman had built within sight of the road from Cologne to Trier.
The entire tour passes through little forest and offers constantly changing, sweeping views. The highlights mentioned can be enjoyed at leisure, as there are plenty of benches everywhere. Hiking distance: 15 km with 260 metres in altitude.
