Birresborn

When you enter the Birresborn ice caves, the cold comes first. For centuries, the so-called "ice caves" were used as ice storage , and even in hot summers the temperature does not rise above 7 degrees. Just one of many possible uses over the course of time. The history of the caves as a place where coveted millstones were quarried is still recognisable today. The millstones were used throughout the country to grind oak bark, which was then used as a tanning agent in leather processing. During the Second World War and other times of need, the caves turned from quarry to refuge.

Today, bats use the caves as winter quarters. For nature conservation reasons, the ice caves in Birresborn are therefore only open from 15 April to 15 October.

Tip: we recommend sturdy shoes and a torch for visiting the caves.

The "Mußepfad Schneifelpfad" hiking trail leads directly past the Birresborn ice caves.

You can also reach the caves with a short walk from the car parks in the centre of the village (walking time approx. 50 minutes) or from Birresborn railway station (walking time approx. 60 minutes).
