Hillesheim
The city wall of Hillesheim, together with St. Martin's Church, is the defining landmark of the city and a key part of the city coat of arms. Its origins date back to the 13th century , when it provided protection and significance to Hillesheim. Mentioned for the first time in a document from 1306, it bears witness to a tumultuous history with times of peace as well as destructions – among others by French troops in 1689 and the English army in 1705.
For centuries, remnants of the wall have been preserved until, during the process of the urban core renovation, the city wall was extensively restored and partially rebuilt. Today, remnants of the once-imposing fortifications are visible throughout the old town center. Five round and square towers as well as the walkable rampart path in the southwest invite visitors to experience history up close. From here, there is a wide view over Hillesheim and the Bolsdorfer Tälchen down into the Kylltal.
With the designation of Hillesheim as a European Model Town in 1982, the historic city center became a special attraction. Inside the city wall, there is now a biotope facility, an open-air stage, and numerous seating areas. Regular services, concerts, theater performances, and cultural events provide an impressive backdrop, making the city wall a lively place of encounter and history.
