Erlebnis Erdgeschichte: Vulkangarten Steffeln
May 22, 2024 - Oct 30, 2024
Experience Earth's History: Steffeln Volcanic Garden and Eichholzmaar
The landscape walk leads through the typical Eifel village of Steffeln, which has already won several awards in the "Our Village has a Future" competition, past historic houses, old wayside crosses and wayside shrines. Many old farmhouses in the village are built of locally quarried volcanic stones, often solidified tuffs. The hike continues to the Steffeln volcanic garden. The former lava mining at Steffelnkopf has severely decimated the volcanic cone, which used to be over 600 m high. This exposed the volcanic layers inside. The exposed volcanic vent was converted into an experimental and educational volcano.
If you wish, you can make a short detour (by car) with the guide to Eichholzmaar.
