Freilaufende Ziegen im Vulkangarten Steffeln

Steffeln

The animal good landscapers can be found at their workplace in the Vulkangarten Steffeln.

A part of preserving crater filling, an extremely informative walk, and goats as landscapers - the Vulkangarten Steffeln is worth your visit.

The interior of the volcanoes can be particularly impressive to experience again in the Vulkangarten Steffeln. The extraction of the Steffelberg revealed the layers in the volcanic crater that formed during the eruptions.

About sixty meters has the originally 609-meter high volcano Steffelberg lost over a century due to the extraction of volcanic slag. But the "hole in the landscape" brought something else to light: the various stratifications of the volcanic eruptions, which now show how complex the eruptive events were when looking into the crater. Fine and coarse materials, lapilli and ashes alternate with each other. In the area of the former vent, from which the glowing material rose, two basalt veins intersect – a unique characteristic of the Steffenkopf. It was formed when, after a first major eruption, hot lava rose again and created a kind of lake.

The Eifelverein offers guided tours from Steffeln every Wednesday during the main season, where the church and the former parsonage stand on a lava tuff ring. In addition, there are geo-special excursions led by knowledgeable guides.

Here, the goat becomes the gardener!

During your walk through the Vulkangarten, you will learn many interesting facts at 15 information stations. To maintain the interesting geological exposures in the Vulkangarten and to prevent the facility from being completely overgrown by vegetation, a herd of goats is employed in the Vulkangarten as "landscapers" as part of an ecological grazing project.

The goat herd has only one mission: to eat in order to preserve biodiversity and the landscape. And they do it really well!

Visitors are therefore requested to ensure that the gate is closed again when entering and leaving the Vulkangarten, so that none of the four-legged friends leaves the premises.
