A glimpse into the heart of the Volcanic Eifel

Anyone who wants to experience the fascinating world of the Volcanic Eifel up close should visit the Rother Kopf near Gerolstein, located between the districts of Roth and Müllenborn. The 566-meter-high volcanic cone, shaped by erosion, houses the impressive millstone caves, where angular lava slag and porous rock provide a striking insight into the region's volcanic past.

Since the 13th century, the people of the Eifel have used the material found here, especially the air-filled slag, for the extraction of millstones, as its sharp-edged pores were perfect for grinding grain. Today, the deep caves carved into the rock impress not only with their unique stone but also with the cold winter air stored there. This air collects in the niches and creates a distinct microclimate. Due to the prevailing cold, the millstone caves are also called ice caves. The average temperature inside the cave is about 6 degrees. When visiting, warm clothing, sturdy footwear, and a flashlight are recommended.

From Gerolstein, the Rother Kopf can be hiked on the "Stauseerunde" or from Müllenborn on the "Mühlsteinweg"" hike.
