The mysterious 13 - Twelve maars and a crater lake
A guided tour of the volcanic lakes of the Eifel takes place every Sunday from April to October at 11 am. Today's maar: Eichholz maar

As dramatic and wild as the formation of the maars was, the water-filled maars appear to us today as quiet and mysterious - the peaceful eyes of the Eifel. Many legends and stories surround these silent witnesses to the battle of the elements. Listen to the experienced guides on our Sunday tours.

The year is 1811 and a certain J.J. Tranchot, a French geographer, is travelling through the Eifel to carry out the first topographical survey of the Rhineland on behalf of Napoleon. Between the villages of Duppach and Steffeln, he picks up a blue pencil to draw a small lake called Gussweiher on his map. Tranchot knew little about the origins of this small lake. But you can find out on an eventful hike to this beautiful spot in the Eifel. Because this body of water is one of the mysterious 13 that have made the volcanic Eifel world-famous.

Price: €5.00 per person, children up to 12 years free

Der Westwall im Oberen Kylltal
Sep 16, 2026

The Siegfried Line was a military defense system on the western border of the German Reich that was around 630 km long and consisted of over 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and countless trenches and anti-tank barriers. It ran from Kleve on the Dutch border southwards to the Swiss border. The complex was built by the National Socialists between 1936 and 1940. Our hike leads to numerous remnants (bunkers, anti-tank ditches, hump line) of the Westwall. Mein Freund der Baum - über die Wacholderheide Seiderath zu meinem Lieblingsbaum
May 14, 2026

It could tell a lot, the Liberation Beech or Napoleon's Beech on the "Alten Voss" near Berlingen.                                                                                 Clinging to the old volcano, it has defied wind and weather for centuries and is reluctant to reveal its secrets and experiences. The way to it leads through a juniper heather near Pelm and depending on the season there is also a flora worth seeing and worth protecting. Price: adults € 8.00, children up to 16 years free, groups € 60.00, information / registration (required): Johannes Munkler, email: J.Munkler@t-online.de, tel: 06591 3888, mobile: 0171 6443572, hiking distance 8 km at 220 meters altitude, walking time approx. 3 hours.

Wacholder- und Orchideezauber am Hönselberg
May 29, 2026

On this excursion we want to take a closer look at the orchids (magnifying glass!) in order to recognise the variability of these beauties in addition to their fascinating aesthetic beauty. The geological conditions of soil formation, the sometimes changing anthropogenic interventions and today's care of the protected natural area can be traced in the field. Price: € 10.00 per participant, Info/registration required by 4 pm the day before: Alfred Graff, mobile: 0172 2661284, email:vulkan-ag@arcor.de, Meeting point: Bereich Hillesheimer Kalkmulde, exact meeting point will be announced by e-mail approx. one week before the event
