Eisenbahnmuseum Jünkerath - Vortrag Vortrag über Luxuszüge

Nov 15, 2025

Jünkerath-Glaadt

The railway enthusiasts Jünkerath present as part of their lecture series "Time Travel Railway" how traveling by rail has developed into luxury and comfort both regionally and globally. The lecture opens a window into the history, technology, culture, and future of noble travel. The lecture takes place on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 3 PM at the Railway Museum, Mühlengasse 3a in Jünkerath-Glaadt. The speaker is Karl-Josef Bales, a former railway worker and recognized expert on the lecture topic.

When, in the mid-19th century, monarchs recognized the advantages of the railway, not only were the train stations, but also the luxurious royal trains adapted to their demands: Kierberg became the imperial train station and Gerolstein became the royal train station. The rulers of the "Third Reich" traveled in luxury-class service trains to the Eifel. The same salon cars were later used by German chancellors and Queen Elizabeth II. for state visits.

As a train of kings, diplomats, writers, and legendary passengers such as Mata Hari, Marlene Dietrich, and crime author Agatha Christie, the Orient Express revolutionized the travel of the hautevolee. In 1883, it began a new connection between the Occident and the Orient. This luxury train became a core element of a whole system, which by 1913 already included 31 luxury trains in Europe and provided for a second golden age in the 1920s, among which in 1928 in Germany the Rheingold Express competed as a salon car train against an international competition of luxury trains.

The lecture is not only a contribution to railway history but also to the cultural history of traveling in luxury and comfort. In addition to Germany's and Europe's great premium trains, a selection of the most luxurious comfort trains from around the world will finally be presented.
