Volcanological excursion around the Rockeskyller Kopf with a visit to a mine
After an introduction to the volcanology of the Eifel volcanoes, the excursion leads around the volcanic complex of the Rockeskyller Kopf, visiting various outcrops. The outcrops provide detailed information about the depositional conditions and the deposited rocks, which can be assigned to different volcanic eruption phases in terms of their shape and appearance. A visit to a rock pit being excavated reveals impressive outcrops with fresh sections and high excavation walls and gives an idea of the thickness of the entire deposits and the size of the former volcanic edifice. The deposits, which are also visually impressive, reveal a special aesthetic of nature.
Sturdy shoes and (weather) appropriate clothing are recommended. Photographic equipment, magnifying glass, container for rock samples, possibly a geologist's hammer, safety goggles and protective gloves are useful.
