Hocheifelweg 3. Etappe Hillesehim - Niederehe mit dem Eifelverein Gerolstein

Oct 5, 2025

Gerolstein

This main hiking trail of the Eifel Association is relatively central in the Vulkaneifel and thus also in the heart of the entire Eifel region. After we hiked the stage from Lissendorf to Hillesheim last year, we want to explore the 3rd stage from Hillesheim to Niederehe this year. With 11 km and 190 meters of elevation gain, the tour is classified as easy. We start in the "crime capital" Hillesheim and soon reach our first destination - the Schwedenschanze. The Schwedenschanze gets its name from the siege by the "Lotharingian peoples," who, as allies of Hessian troops, occupied this elevation from Hillesheim during the Thirty Years' War. After a short rest with a magnificent view of Hillesheim, we continue via Berndorf with its fortified church, and the "Burgdorf" Kerpen with the grave of the Eifel painter Fritz von Wille to Niederehe. Here, a visit to the monastery church with the baroque organ by Balthasar König is worthwhile before we conclude the hiking day with a well-deserved break.

The cost for the carpool fee from/to Gerolstein is 3 € per person.

Durch die Wacholderheiden zum Hippelsteinchen in Gönnersdorf
Aug 27, 2025

The limestone ridges in the area of the Eifel limestone hollows are known as the Tuscany of the Eifel. The appearance of the landscape with its impressive juniper heaths is very close to the Italian model. Centuries of extensive grazing have created valuable habitats. With a little luck, you can discover orchids and gentians here, or observe colourful butterflies, lizards and slow worms. The highlight of the round tour is the "Hippelsteinchen", a dolomite rock around which numerous legends revolve. Price: € 5.00 per person, € 8.00 per couple, free for children under 10. Meeting point: 54584 Gönnersdorf, Zum Hirdenberg (drive straight on from the B 421 to the car park).
