KAI MEYER
THE ANTIQUARIAN AT THE OLD CEMETERY
The Book City of Leipzig, 1930: In the midst of troubled times, four young men gather in an antiquarian bookshop in the Graphic Quarter. All are sons from good families, all are bored with life. Instead of pursuing their studies, Felix, Vadim, Julius, and Eddie found the "Club Casaubon." Driven by their passion for literature and the thrill of adventure, they become book thieves, specializing in precious, occult volumes. But when the enigmatic Eva joins the club, they become increasingly entangled in the plans of ruthless powers.
Fifteen years later, 1945: After the war, Felix works as a librarian for the Americans, cataloging millions of stolen books. His mission takes him back to the destroyed Leipzig. The friends from back then are either missing or unrecognizable. And is Eva really dead? As the city comes under the pressure of the impending Soviet occupation, Felix finds himself entangled in a web of betrayal and deadly secrets that originates from the darkest corners of his past.
“The German Carlos Ruiz Zafón.” – La Voz de Galicia
“How Kai Meyer brings the Graphic Quarter and its inhabitants back to life, how he dissects the escalating National Socialism, how he describes the first persecutions of dissenters while exposing the accelerants of anti-Semitism—all of this showcases great literary talent.” – Kölner Stadtanzeiger
