Originally created by the mining of millstones, over the centuries the caves became an ice cellar and were highly valued as a refuge in times of crisis. Today, bats use the caves as winter quarters. The Gerolstein railway depot opens its doors on the weekend and offers a colorful program featuring live music, culinary offerings, and exciting insights into the historical site. You can see, among other things, the turntable, water cranes, and historical as well as newly built buildings. A special highlight is the Adler – a replica of the oldest steam locomotive in Germany – which will be visiting and conducting shuttle rides from the railway depot.
