Wanderung zum "Scheewen Sunnech" nach Gees mit dem Eifelverein Gerolstein
Feb 21, 2026
Gerolstein
On the first fasting weekend, the ancient pagan custom of driving out winter is celebrated in some places in the Eifel. A large iron wheel wrapped in straw is rolled down the "Baarlay" ablaze at dusk. This is intended to welcome spring and drive away the harsh winter. The older tradition states that the quieter the wheel runs, the better the year will be. Afterwards, eggs and bacon collected in the village are consumed. Alternatively, there are also "Heedeligkooche" (buckwheat pancakes) made with sparkling water from the Geeser Drees. The hike is about 10 km long. Please remember to bring a flashlight.
