Birgel Wanderweg LB 4
Birgel
In the forest, you will come across the Black Cross and the Hubertus oak.
The approx. 7 km long circular route starts at the community center in Birgel. First you pass the Hubertus Chapel. The chapel, which dates back to the 16th century, has an impressive star vault in the choir and nave and a bell from the 16th century. You continue along the sports field and pass the Birgeler Hardt natural monument, a red sandstone rock, a geological feature of the region. Shortly afterwards, you turn into the forest and spend a long time in the shady and cool woods. On the way, you will come across the Schwarzkreuz, in memory of Magdalena Schwarz, who was struck by lightning while herding cattle in 1911. The cross was later misused for shooting practice by the French during the Second World War. Later, the Hubertus oak tree lies along the path. A pedunculate oak from 1750 with a height of 23m and a circumference of 2.5m. Finally, you leave the forest and walk through fields to the viewpoint above the sports field.
Beautiful view of the Kyllaue to the south of Birgel.
