History, culture and regional specialties

Our museums invite you to discover the Gerolstein region in a variety of ways. In lovingly designed, often small museums, you can gain exciting insights into volcanism, crafts, everyday life and the region's past.

Many of these museums also open outside of regular opening hours on special dates on request - ideal for groups, school classes or individual discovery tours.

Our museums

  • <p>You look into a bright room filled with old railway items. In the center are two mannequins in railway uniforms. Old signs with train numbers hang on the walls. A railway signal serves as a railing at the stairs. In several display cases, documents and tools are exhibited.</p>

    Eisenbahnmuseum - Jünkerath

    The Jünkerath Railway Museum documents over 150 years of railroad history in the Eifel and Moselle region. Moselle region is documented. In the exhibition, visitors will find numerous interesting objects from the everyday life of railroad workers. More detailed information about the museum and the objects on display can be found on the Internet at www.eisenbahnmuseum-juenkerath.de. Opening times: April to the end of September, Saturdays from 2 - 4 pm. For larger groups special opening times are also possible by appointment. Admission is free of charge, a donation is requested.

    Museum "Villa Sarabodis"

    Gerolstein

    The small, charming museum “Villa Sarabodis”, located in the shadow of the Church of the Saviour, houses an astonishing variety of Roman and Celtic artefacts. Guided tours in the museum and the adjoining Villa Sarabodis are possible at any time on request.

    Telefonmuseum

    Since his apprenticeship as a telecommunications craftsman in 1951, museum operator Heribert Schirmer has collected over 450 telephones from 15 nations as well as 200 radios and phono devices.

    Gerolstein Natural History Museum - journeys in time on the Eifelsteig

    The Natural History Museum in the old town hall of Gerolstein is on the trail of nature. In addition to minerals, rocks and fossils from the region, there are also exhibits from the prehistoric and early history as well as the most species-rich collection of butterflies in the Eifel.

    Historische Wassermühle Birgel

    The historic Birgel watermill is a unique mill experience centre and the largest in Europe. The four mills are still in operation today: mustard mill, grain mill, oil mill and sawmill.
