Geo-Wanderweg "Vulkane, Maare und Dreese
Gerolstein
At Eichholzmaar, the northernmost water-filled maar in the Eifel, two attractive adventure trails (approx. 9 km per loop) have been created. Three ferruginous springs with refreshing mineral water, rare birds and plants, the impressive volcano garden in Steffeln and the Knauf adventure forge in Duppach are just some of the numerous attractions along the two circular routes.
The Eichholzmaar is an impressive yet tranquil place of power at the center of the circular trails, where gorse blooms in spring and rare water and meadow birds can be observed all year round. The Duppacher Drees, Steffelner Drees and Aueler Drees are three ferruginous springs with refreshing mineral water on the adventure trail. The Steffeln volcano garden is undoubtedly a volcanological highlight. But the impressive tufa ring below the church in Steffeln and the Knauf adventure forge in Duppach are also worthwhile destinations along the way.
At the "Eifelblick Heilert", on the Duppacher Höhe and at the Steffeln volcano garden, hikers can expect great views. As a bonus, there is a griffin's head from Roman times at the Duppach Weiermühle Roman excavation site, when a magnificent Villa Rustica was located on the banks of the Duppach pond maar, which was probably water-filled at the time, just 800 m from the Roman Trier-Cologne highway that ran along the hill.
Parking spaces to access the adventure loops can be found in Steffeln, Duppach, at the Steffeln volcano garden and at Eichholzmaar.
Tip: At the Vulkanhotel Steffelberg and the Landgasthof Sünnen in Steffeln, you can enjoy typical regional dishes and replenish your energy reserves after a strenuous hike.
Hiking distance: approx. 20 km (for both loops Duppach and Steffeln)
Total hiking time: approx. 6 hours
