Church of the Redeemer Gerolstein
Guided tours of the Church of the Redeemer and Villa Sarabodis on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:00 and 15:00 o'clock!
Even today, the magnificent series of images inside the Church of the Redeemer in Gerolstein—composed of approximately 24 million mosaic tiles—bears witness to the wealth and power of the last German emperor. On May 25, 1911, the cornerstone was laid for the Protestant Church of the Redeemer in the up-and-coming spa town of Gerolstein, right in the heart of the Catholic Eifel region. After a construction period of just under two years, the church was consecrated on October 15, 1913, in the presence of Emperor Wilhelm II—it is still regarded today as a rare art-historical document of the waning imperial era and is interpreted primarily as a political monument.
The impressive central structure in the Neo-Romanesque style, with its sparkling gold mosaics, delights thousands of churchgoers every year. The iconography, designed by the Hanover-based church painter Hermann Schaper, aesthetically combines religious themes with the political claim to power of the church’s founder, Emperor Wilhelm II.
During foundation work, the remains of a Roman-era estate were also discovered:
The small, charming Villa Sarabodis Museum, located next to the church, displays remarkable relics of Roman-Celtic culture.
Important notice for guests and church visitors:
The Church of the Redeemer and the “Villa Sarabodis” museum can only be visited from April through October as part of a guided tour.
