On this varied circular trail through various nature reserves, we encounter geological and botanical highlights.
The Gönnersdorfer Leyen are a 200-metre-long and up to 25-metre-high dolomite rock chain on the right slope of the Kyll valley. The limestone rocks were formed about 380 million years ago. There is an information board at the foot of the rocks.
A special rock formation is the Hippelsteinchen. Geologically, it is a dolomite and mushroom rock. Several dolomite blocks are layered on top of each other so that the rock formation resembles a mushroom, about 5 metres high and just as wide. It is not impossible that the stone has served as a boundary stone since ancient times, probably even as a signpost and cult site.
The Gönnersdorf limestone grasslands are semi-arid limestone grasslands. They emerged from forests and were kept open by grazing. Without use or care, they would revert to forest.

The circular route is only signposted in one direction: Hiking in and around Gönnersdorf - white arrow on orange background.
From the car park, with the refuge behind us, we keep left and walk along the main road out of the village past the chapel. At Giesenberg we turn right and follow the road uphill. We pass the Rothenstück farm and have the opportunity to enjoy the view over the Vulkaneifel on the bench. Continue left and cross the K54. Shortly afterwards, we turn left onto a field path and follow it to the barbecue hut. Now a small path leads through the forest past the Gönnersdorfer Leyen and ends on the cycle path. We turn left and continue to the road. There we turn right, cross the railway line and the Kyll and come to the B 421 . We continue straight ahead towards a playground. After this, we turn right and follow the circular route through the nature reserve. On the way, another bench invites you to take a break with a view over Gönnerdorf and the Hippelsteinchen. The route continues along meadow paths past the Hippelsteinchen. Shortly after the rock formation, we turn right and walk uphill. At the top, we turn left and walk back to the B421 via "Zum Hirdenberg". We cross this, as well as the Kyll and the railway line, and turn left at the crossroads onto the main road, which then leads us back to the starting point.
Hiking in the Eifel is great fun if you are well prepared.
Carry a rucksack with drinks, provisions and a mobile phone.
